The National Action Plan for the Conservation and Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR) is a comprehensive framework outlining the technical, scientific, economic, and legislative actions needed to conserve biodiversity in farm animals and promote their sustainable use. Its implementation requires collaboration among farmers, associations, public institutions, policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders.

Aligned with FAO recommendations, the plan prioritizes two key actions for countries beginning conservation efforts for autochthonous breeds:

  1. Identification and Assessment: This involves identifying local animal species, breeds, and populations, assessing their population size, development trends, geographic distribution, farm sizes, production systems, and extinction risks.
  2. In-situ Conservation: It includes creating a list of breeds/populations at risk of extinction based on FAO standards, evaluating factors causing a decline in farmer interest, and developing in-situ conservation programs to safeguard these breeds.

The plan aims to preserve local breeds while ensuring their sustainable economic use.
